B:SM relies on ALTECH’s technology, based on video surveillance and artificial intelligence, to monitor occupancy in the city’s tourist coach parking and stopping zones.
Zona Bus 4.0, the new management model for Barcelona’s tourist coach parking and stopping zones driven by Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (B:SM), incorporates an occupancy control system developed by ALTECH that combines video surveillance and artificial intelligence analysis in the city’s main tourist areas.
The project, awarded to ALTECH by B:SM, aims to automate access control for tourist coaches to the city’s various BUS Zones, reinforcing the new tourist mobility model that Zona Bus 4.0 has implemented since it went live last February.
A video surveillance and artificial intelligence system for the whole city
The solution designed and implemented by ALTECH is based on a system of video surveillance cameras, connected via fiber optics and integrated with a video management and artificial intelligence platform, which analyzes BUS Zone activity in real time.
The project involves the initial installation of 35 cameras in areas of high tourist traffic across the city, including, for example, the area around the Sagrada Família, Marquès de l’Argentera, l’Arc de Triomf, the Teatre Nacional, the passeig de Lluís Companys, the plaça de les Drassanes, and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
Real-time occupancy and non-compliance monitoring
The system developed by ALTECH automatically detects the number of coaches entering each BUS Zone and cross-checks this against the tickets recorded in the SPRO application, making it possible to compare actual occupancy with forecast occupancy and improve the quality of the data available to B:SM. It also identifies cars and vans that improperly occupy these spaces and sends an immediate alert to B:SM’s Operations Control Service (SCO) and to the PDAs carried by monitoring staff, speeding up the resolution of on-site incidents.
The system also identifies each coach’s license plate to automate the opening and closing of SPRO tickets, counts the people using the BUS Zones, and recognizes vehicles by their liveries and brands, further expanding the information available to B:SM on the actual use of each zone.
